It's the brains behind your generator system. The automatic transfer switch (ATS) continuously monitors the power coming from your utility. When the power goes out, the ATS automatically transfers power from the utility to your generator. When utility power is restored, the ATS turns off your generator and transfers back to power from the utility grid.

Automatic Transfer Switches

It is the brain behind your home generator. The ATS automatically turns on the generator when the utility goes down and switches it off when power is restored.

An ATS eliminates the need for homeowners to manually turn on/off their generator. In contrast, portable generators require manual operation and must connect directly to the devices they power.

Without an ATS, homeowners must manually turn the generator on and off, and installers may charge more for the extra electrical work. Most regions require an ATS for generator installation.
